The Reader: Stephen Witt, author, American Moses

The Novel: AMERICAN MOSES follows the members of a small town left without hope when their only synagogue is burnt down. Devastated and wondering what’s next, Southie Lewis, a secular Jew and the town’s local bottom-scrubber, offers to lead them to Las Vegas, purported as the next American Promise Land. When his Jamaican–American wife, Zippy, reluctantly agrees to pack up their two children and leave the only home she’s known, Southie must find a way to lead the caravan of rag-tag congregants as they venture west towards in an increasingly uncertain life.  Written with zaftig wit and a touch of calamity, American Moses is a startling debut novel that tells the inspirational story of Jews wandering through the metaphoric desert of the American experience.

The Event: Stephen Witt has an interesting musical reading where he mixes a blue grass band in between reading excerpts of his book.
