You know you've reached a certain point in your life when you find yourself relating to a character obsessed with his 401(k). Turns out, I'm there. Ken Kalfus did a pitch-perfect job of presenting the earnest absurdity of that particular mania. His reading struck just the right note of gentle wonderment. To quote the Talking Heads, "Well, how did I get here?"
And speaking of the Talking Heads, Mark Z. Danielewski was a total rock star, complete with screaming fans and charged and nimble lyrics. I'll admit that it took a few minutes for me to switch gears from Kalfus's prose to Danielewski's free-verse flavored work, but it was quite a ride once I settled in. Plus, I was lucky enough to have a seat!
